Poking the Lava

Well, we didn’t get to roast the marshmallows… but I did get to poke lava!

After I’d already poked it a couple times, suffering the immense heat coming off it, Stacey yells to me, “Do it again so I can shoot it on video!”

It was fun. Unfortunately, Stacey fell down and scraped up her leg a bit, but she’s OK. It was a lot of fun, and there are more pics on the way, but the coffee shop is closing in a few minutes, so I’ll let you see more at Stacey’s Picasa page (as usual). Oh, and she recorded a quick hello to her school, too, that you can see on her blog.

Roasting marshmallows on lava

Tomorrow morning at 6:00 am (which is 7:00 back in Valparaiso) Stacey and I leave for Pacaya, the only active volcano in Guatemala that they let you climb. From what we’ve been told, it’s about an hour and half to get there, two hours to climb it, then an hour to climb back down. Stacey bought marshmallows today, because we’ve been told that we can roast them on the lava. Don’t worry, we’ll be sure to take pictures!

Today we went to a Macadamia nut farm with a group from our language school. It was pretty interesting… and as soon as I’m able, I’ll upload pictures! To get there and back, we rode in what they call a “chicken bus.” Imagine a school bus painted in garish colors and then stuffed full of people, including people standing in the aisle and hanging out the door. That’s a chicken bus. We have pics of that, too.
:)

Language school is going well. Today wrapped up our second full week. I’m hoping by the end of next week to have caught up with Stacey! We’ll see…

Our trip to Tikal

Tikal was absolutely amazing. I’d say more, but I think I want to get these pictures uploaded while I have the chance…

OK, that last one deserves an explanation! That’s the same monkey that we took Stacey’s picture with the day before… but this day, when we took it’s picture on the way to breakfast, it must have been in a different mood! All of a sudden, it was coming after me… and then changed direction and went after Stacey! I didn’t know until I heard her screaming (we had run in opposite directions), and by the time I got to her, the situation was already under control. It didn’t do anything but touch her leg, but it was enough to get our adrenaline pumping that morning! Just in time for our long bus ride to Quirigua and then on to Antigua! Those pics will be in the next post…

One for all our Honduran soccer-playing friends

That means you, Bill Bähr!
